Lab 14: Deploy and scale Azure Container Apps

Previous: Lab 13 · Catalog · Next: Lab 15

This self-contained lab uses Azure CLI commands hosted in PowerShell. Complete the guided lane or the automated lane—not both with the same run ID.

Scenario, role, and outcome

Scenario: You are a platform administrator releasing a revisioned serverless container app. Build and prove this disposable service path: A Log Analytics workspace feeds the Container Apps environment; the app with external ingress creates two active revisions, and the ingress controller splits 90/10 traffic before revision and scaling validation.

Learner role: A platform administrator releasing a revisioned serverless container app.

Outcome: Use Azure CLI in PowerShell to create the managed environment and ingress application, create a second revision without replacing the first, and reconcile ingress, scaling, revisions, and traffic, with recoverable state and deterministic cleanup.

Item Value
Duration 120 minutes
Difficulty applied
Cost class low
Command surface Azure CLI (az, az rest, Bicep, AzCopy, or KQL where required) hosted in PowerShell
Live state Not executed during this offline rebuild

Completion criteria:

  • All required checkpoints report pass.
  • The deterministic break/fix is injected, diagnosed, and repaired.
  • cleanup.json reports no active run-owned resources, with any retained item explicitly documented.
LAB-14 five-checkpoint roadmap: Deploy and scale Azure Container Apps
Five learning checkpoints in task order. These arrows show the exercise sequence; see the architecture figure for service connections. Open at full size.

Objectives and checkpoints

Objective Skill Checkpoints
CP-CONTAINERS-03 Provision a container by using Azure Container Apps LAB14-CP01, LAB14-CP03, LAB14-CP05
CP-CONTAINERS-04 Manage sizing and scaling for containers, including Azure Container Instances and Azure Container Apps LAB14-CP02, LAB14-CP04, LAB14-CP05

The authoritative objective wording comes from the Microsoft AZ-104 study guide, skills measured as of 2026-04-17.

Architecture and service topology

LAB-14: Deploy and scale Azure Container Apps; service topology and connections
Deploy and scale Azure Container Apps — topology for this lab. Open at full size.

The editable source is architecture.mmd. A Log Analytics workspace feeds the Container Apps environment; the app with external ingress creates two active revisions, and the ingress controller splits 90/10 traffic before revision and scaling validation.

Concept primer and design decisions

A Container Apps environment supplies the boundary and observability integration. Revisions are immutable snapshots; traffic weights choose active revisions; replicas scale inside each active revision according to the configured rule.

Design decisions:

  • Use multiple-revision mode for controlled traffic splitting.
  • Create a second revision through a deterministic environment change.
  • Bound minimum and maximum replicas.

Required and optional inputs

Input Required Source Safe example Gate behavior
run-id — Unique lowercase run ownership identifier Yes parameter az104l14-01 block
subscription-id — Expected disposable subscription ID Yes parameter-or-environment (AZ104_SUBSCRIPTION_ID) 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 block
location — Approved primary Azure region Yes parameter-or-environment (AZ104_LOCATION) westeurope block

Secrets stay in temporary environment variables and are never written to run.json, validation evidence, or Git. A skip-checkpoint gate produces a visible partial result; it never becomes a pass.

Read-only preflight

Readiness, preview, explicit execution, and result validation
Follow the read-only checks and execution gates defined by this lab. A failed required gate blocks progress. Open at full size.

Sign in deliberately, inspect the active context, then run the lab preflight. It never signs in, changes context, installs an extension, registers a provider, or creates a resource.

az login
az account show --query '{cloud:environmentName,subscription:id,tenant:tenantId,user:user.name}' --output json
./scripts/cli/Preflight.ps1 -SubscriptionId $env:AZ104_SUBSCRIPTION_ID -RunId 'az104l14-01' -Location 'westeurope'

Representative redacted output:

context                 True  cloud=AzureCloud; tenant=<redacted>; subscription=<redacted>
azure-cli               True  2.88.x
provider:<namespace>    True  Registered
region                  True  westeurope
Preflight passed. It performed no Azure mutation.

If a required row fails, stop. Correct the local tool, context, provider, quota, SKU, region, permission, or input outside the lab, then rerun preflight.

Task 1 — Verify Container Apps extension and regional environment support

Checkpoint: LAB14-CP01

Purpose and operational relevance: Read the provider, region, SKU, feature, quota, and companion-tool signals needed for verify container apps extension and regional environment support, without changing Azure state. The change is unsafe when an outdated Azure CLI extension can expose commands but reject current revision or ingress arguments. This checkpoint therefore proves: The containerapp command group responds and the selected region offers a managed-environment location.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az provider show --namespace Microsoft.App --query registrationState --output tsv
az provider show --namespace Microsoft.OperationalInsights --query registrationState --output tsv
az extension show --name containerapp --query version --output tsv

Expected state: The containerapp command group responds and the selected region offers a managed-environment location.

Representative redacted output:

The containerapp command group responds and the selected region offers a managed-environment location.

Positive validation:

$registration = az provider show --namespace Microsoft.App --query registrationState --output tsv
if ($registration -ne 'Registered') { throw 'Microsoft.App is not registered.' }

Expected positive result: The containerapp command group responds and the selected region offers a managed-environment location.

Negative validation:

$extensionVersion = az extension show --name containerapp --query version --output tsv
if (-not $extensionVersion) { throw 'The containerapp extension is missing.' }

Expected negative result: LAB14-CP01 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: The containerapp extension is missing.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB14-CP01 UTC result for verify container apps extension and regional environment support.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB14-CP01.
  • Positive assertion proving: The containerapp command group responds and the selected region offers a managed-environment location.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: The containerapp extension is missing.

Common failure and safe retry: An outdated Azure CLI extension can expose commands but reject current revision or ingress arguments. Retry LAB14-CP01 for verify container apps extension and regional environment support only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB14-CP02, LAB14-CP03, LAB14-CP04, LAB14-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB14-CP01 for verify container apps extension and regional environment support; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 2 — Create the managed environment and ingress application

Checkpoint: LAB14-CP02

Purpose and operational relevance: Provision and immediately inventory the exact run-owned resources needed to create the managed environment and ingress application, so partial completion remains recoverable. The change is unsafe when environment provisioning can stall when Log Analytics or regional Container Apps capacity is unavailable. This checkpoint therefore proves: The environment and app are provisioned, external ingress targets the declared port, and the first revision is healthy.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

$workspace = "law-$suffix"; $environment = "cae-$suffix"; $app = "ca-$suffix"
az monitor log-analytics workspace create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --workspace-name $workspace --location $Location --output none
$customerId = az monitor log-analytics workspace show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --workspace-name $workspace --query customerId --output tsv
$sharedKey = az monitor log-analytics workspace get-shared-keys --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --workspace-name $workspace --query primarySharedKey --output tsv
az containerapp env create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $environment --location $Location --logs-workspace-id $customerId --logs-workspace-key $sharedKey --output none
Remove-Variable sharedKey -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
az containerapp create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --environment $environment --image mcr.microsoft.com/k8se/quickstart:latest --target-port 80 --ingress external --min-replicas 0 --max-replicas 3 --scale-rule-name http --scale-rule-http-concurrency 20 --env-vars LAB_RUN=$RunId --output none

Expected state: The environment and app are provisioned, external ingress targets the declared port, and the first revision is healthy.

Representative redacted output:

The environment and app are provisioned, external ingress targets the declared port, and the first revision is healthy.

Positive validation:

$stateValue = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.provisioningState --output tsv
if ($stateValue -ne 'Succeeded') { throw "Container App state is $stateValue." }

Expected positive result: The environment and app are provisioned, external ingress targets the declared port, and the first revision is healthy.

Negative validation:

$externalIngress = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.configuration.ingress.external --output tsv
if ($externalIngress -ne 'true') { throw 'External ingress is not configured.' }

Expected negative result: LAB14-CP02 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: External ingress is not configured.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB14-CP02 UTC result for create the managed environment and ingress application.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB14-CP02.
  • Positive assertion proving: The environment and app are provisioned, external ingress targets the declared port, and the first revision is healthy.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: External ingress is not configured.

Common failure and safe retry: Environment provisioning can stall when Log Analytics or regional Container Apps capacity is unavailable. Retry LAB14-CP02 for create the managed environment and ingress application only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB14-CP03, LAB14-CP04, LAB14-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB14-CP02 for create the managed environment and ingress application; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 3 — Create a second revision without replacing the first

Checkpoint: LAB14-CP03

Purpose and operational relevance: Configure and independently inspect the control-plane and data-path properties needed to create a second revision without replacing the first. The change is unsafe when single-revision mode deactivates the old revision and defeats a controlled traffic-split exercise. This checkpoint therefore proves: Multiple-revision mode retains both revisions and the new image produces a separately addressable revision.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az containerapp revision set-mode --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --mode multiple
az containerapp update --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --set-env-vars RELEASE=v2 --revision-suffix v2 --output none
$revisions = @(az containerapp revision list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query "[?properties.active].name" --output tsv)
if ($revisions.Count -lt 2) { throw 'Two active revisions are required for traffic splitting.' }
az containerapp ingress traffic set --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --revision-weight "$($revisions[0])=90" "$($revisions[-1])=10" --output none

Expected state: Multiple-revision mode retains both revisions and the new image produces a separately addressable revision.

Representative redacted output:

Multiple-revision mode retains both revisions and the new image produces a separately addressable revision.

Positive validation:

$active = az containerapp revision list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query "[?properties.active] | length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$active -lt 2) { throw "Only $active revision is active." }

Expected positive result: Multiple-revision mode retains both revisions and the new image produces a separately addressable revision.

Negative validation:

$mode = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.configuration.activeRevisionsMode --output tsv
if ($mode -ne 'Multiple') { throw "Revision mode is $mode." }

Expected negative result: LAB14-CP03 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: Revision mode is reported mode.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB14-CP03 UTC result for create a second revision without replacing the first.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB14-CP03.
  • Positive assertion proving: Multiple-revision mode retains both revisions and the new image produces a separately addressable revision.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: Revision mode is reported mode.

Common failure and safe retry: Single-revision mode deactivates the old revision and defeats a controlled traffic-split exercise. Retry LAB14-CP03 for create a second revision without replacing the first only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB14-CP04, LAB14-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB14-CP03 for create a second revision without replacing the first; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 4 — Split traffic between healthy revisions

Checkpoint: LAB14-CP04

Purpose and operational relevance: Exercise the deterministic operational or denied path needed to split traffic between healthy revisions, then retain comparable before-and-after results. The change is unsafe when traffic updates fail when a revision name is stale or the supplied weights do not total 100. This checkpoint therefore proves: Traffic weights total 100 and are assigned only to the two run-owned active revisions.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az containerapp ingress traffic show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --output table

Expected state: Traffic weights total 100 and are assigned only to the two run-owned active revisions.

Representative redacted output:

Traffic weights total 100 and are assigned only to the two run-owned active revisions.

Positive validation:

$weight = az containerapp ingress traffic show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query "[].weight | sum(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$weight -ne 100) { throw "Traffic weights total $weight." }

Expected positive result: Traffic weights total 100 and are assigned only to the two run-owned active revisions.

Negative validation:

$inactiveWeighted = az containerapp ingress traffic show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query '[?weight>`0` && revisionName==null] | length(@)' --output tsv
if ([int]$inactiveWeighted -ne 0) { throw 'Traffic points to an unresolved revision.' }

Expected negative result: LAB14-CP04 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: Traffic points to an unresolved revision.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB14-CP04 UTC result for split traffic between healthy revisions.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB14-CP04.
  • Positive assertion proving: Traffic weights total 100 and are assigned only to the two run-owned active revisions.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: Traffic points to an unresolved revision.

Common failure and safe retry: Traffic updates fail when a revision name is stale or the supplied weights do not total 100. Retry LAB14-CP04 for split traffic between healthy revisions only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB14-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB14-CP04 for split traffic between healthy revisions; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 5 — Reconcile ingress, scaling, revisions, and traffic

Checkpoint: LAB14-CP05

Purpose and operational relevance: Reconcile live service properties, returned IDs, and dependency-aware removal needed to reconcile ingress, scaling, revisions, and traffic before handoff. The change is unsafe when checking only the application provisioning state can miss an unhealthy revision or incorrect traffic allocation. This checkpoint therefore proves: Ingress FQDN, replica bounds, active revision health, and traffic percentages agree with the intended release model.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query "{fqdn:properties.configuration.ingress.fqdn,mode:properties.configuration.activeRevisionsMode,scale:properties.template.scale}" --output json

Expected state: Ingress FQDN, replica bounds, active revision health, and traffic percentages agree with the intended release model.

Representative redacted output:

Ingress FQDN, replica bounds, active revision health, and traffic percentages agree with the intended release model.

Positive validation:

$maximum = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.template.scale.maxReplicas --output tsv
if ([int]$maximum -ne 3) { throw "Maximum replicas is $maximum." }

Expected positive result: Ingress FQDN, replica bounds, active revision health, and traffic percentages agree with the intended release model.

Negative validation:

$minimum = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.template.scale.minReplicas --output tsv
$maximum = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.template.scale.maxReplicas --output tsv
if ([int]$minimum -gt [int]$maximum) { throw 'Minimum replicas exceeds maximum replicas.' }

Expected negative result: LAB14-CP05 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: Minimum replicas exceeds maximum replicas.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB14-CP05 UTC result for reconcile ingress, scaling, revisions, and traffic.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB14-CP05.
  • Positive assertion proving: Ingress FQDN, replica bounds, active revision health, and traffic percentages agree with the intended release model.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: Minimum replicas exceeds maximum replicas.

Common failure and safe retry: Checking only the application provisioning state can miss an unhealthy revision or incorrect traffic allocation. Retry LAB14-CP05 for reconcile ingress, scaling, revisions, and traffic only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After all service validation and evidence capture, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB14-CP05 for reconcile ingress, scaling, revisions, and traffic; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Final validation and result interpretation

Run independent deployment validation after all required checkpoints:

./scripts/cli/Validate.ps1 -RunId 'az104l14-01' -Mode Deployment
az resource list --resource-group 'rg-az104-l14-az104l14-01' --query '[].{name:name,type:type}' --output table
  • pass: every required positive and negative check passed.
  • partial: every required check passed, but at least one optional gate was deliberately skipped.
  • fail: a required checkpoint failed; do not record the lab as complete.

Keep the redacted validation.json; do not retain credentials, tokens, access keys, certificate material, email addresses, tenant IDs, or unredacted command output.

Deterministic break/fix exercise

Injection: Route 100 percent of traffic to one revision, removing the intended canary split.

Inject the bounded fault:

$revisions = @(az containerapp revision list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query "[?properties.active].name" --output tsv)
az containerapp ingress traffic set --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --revision-weight "$($revisions[0])=100" "$($revisions[-1])=0" --output none

Capture the failed state with a read-only query:

az containerapp ingress traffic show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --output table

Repair only the injected setting, then repeat the same query:

az containerapp ingress traffic set --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --revision-weight "$($revisions[0])=90" "$($revisions[-1])=10" --output none
az containerapp ingress traffic show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --output table

Expected symptom: The canary revision no longer receives the planned 10 percent sample.

Diagnose with a read-only service query:

az containerapp ingress traffic show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --output table

Diagnosis: Compare active revision names with the ingress traffic weights.

Repair: Restore the recorded 90/10 split using exact active revision names.

Before/after evidence must show the failed negative or positive check before repair and the same check passing afterward. Do not inject a second fault until the first is removed.

Optional job-style challenge

Perform a 90/10 canary release, define success signals, then document rollback to the first revision.

Deliver a short change record containing assumptions, exact commands, redacted evidence, cost and risk notes, rollback, and residual results. The challenge is optional and never changes required checkpoint status.

Troubleshooting

Evidence-led troubleshooting from observation to revalidation
Use read-only evidence to identify the cause, make a targeted repair, and rerun the relevant validation. Open at full size.
Symptom Likely cause Safe next step
Context mismatch Active CLI context differs from run.json Stop, inspect az account show, and select the intended disposable context yourself.
Provider or feature unavailable Registration, region, feature, or SKU gate is unmet Read the preflight result; do not register or enable tenant features implicitly.
Name already exists The run ID is reused or a globally unique name collided Keep existing state intact and choose a new run ID.
Expected state is delayed The service is converging asynchronously Repeat only the read-only query with bounded retries; do not duplicate creation.
Permission denied Role, Graph scope, or data-plane authorization is insufficient Confirm the declared least-privilege boundary; do not broaden access automatically.
Cleanup refuses ownership ID, context, or tags differ from the manifest Investigate the mismatch; never bypass ownership verification.

Cleanup and residual verification

Run-owned cleanup boundary and residual-resource audit
Only verified run-owned objects are eligible for cleanup. Report deliberately retained or soft-deleted items; do not assume they were purged. Open at full size.

Preview exact targets first, execute only after ownership review, then validate post-cleanup:

./scripts/cli/Cleanup.ps1 -RunId 'az104l14-01'
./scripts/cli/Cleanup.ps1 -RunId 'az104l14-01' -Execute
./scripts/cli/Validate.ps1 -RunId 'az104l14-01' -Mode PostCleanup
$minimum = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.template.scale.minReplicas --output tsv
$maximum = az containerapp show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $app --query properties.template.scale.maxReplicas --output tsv
if ([int]$minimum -gt [int]$maximum) { throw 'Minimum replicas exceeds maximum replicas.' }

cleanup.json passes only when no active manifest-managed object remains. Soft-deleted or intentionally retained items must be listed with their reason and expected disposition. The lifecycle never performs irreversible purge automatically.

Exam debrief and assessment

Explain why the expected state, negative check, and cleanup boundary matter—not only which command was used. Map any missed concept back to its task anchor before reviewing the answer key.

Complete QUESTIONS.md, then use ANSWERS.md for option-by-option remediation. Scores of 85–100% indicate mastery, 70–84% indicate targeted review, and below 70% means repeat the mapped tasks.
