Lab 24: Configure Azure Backup policies, protection, restore, reports, and alerts

Previous: Lab 23 · Catalog · Next: Lab 25

This self-contained lab uses Azure CLI commands hosted in PowerShell. Complete the guided lane or the automated lane—not both with the same run ID.

Scenario, role, and outcome

Scenario: You are a recovery administrator protecting and restoring a test vm. Build and prove this disposable service path: The private VM is protected by the Recovery Services vault, an on-demand job creates a recovery point, and disk restore writes recovery artifacts to the staging account before job, item, and retention validation.

Learner role: A recovery administrator protecting and restoring a test VM.

Outcome: Use Azure CLI in PowerShell to create the private vm, staging storage, and vault, enable vm protection and complete an on-demand backup, and reconcile protection, jobs, recovery points, and retained state, with recoverable state and deterministic cleanup.

Item Value
Duration 150 minutes
Difficulty advanced
Cost class elevated
Command surface Azure CLI (az, az rest, Bicep, AzCopy, or KQL where required) hosted in PowerShell
Live state Not executed during this offline rebuild

Completion criteria:

  • All required checkpoints report pass.
  • The deterministic break/fix is injected, diagnosed, and repaired.
  • cleanup.json reports no active run-owned resources, with any retained item explicitly documented.

Architecture and service topology

LAB-24: Configure Azure Backup policies, protection, restore, reports, and alerts; service topology and connections
Configure Azure Backup policies, protection, restore, reports, and alerts — topology for this lab. Open at full size.

The editable source is architecture.mmd. The private VM is protected by the Recovery Services vault, an on-demand job creates a recovery point, and disk restore writes recovery artifacts to the staging account before job, item, and retention validation.

Concept primer and design decisions

A vault, policy, protected item, recovery point, job, and restore target are distinct objects. Backup is proven only by a monitored recovery point and a restore validation; vault cleanup requires protection and retained data to be removed in dependency order.

Design decisions:

  • Use bounded policy retention.
  • Monitor asynchronous backup and restore jobs.
  • Never purge soft-deleted data automatically.

Required and optional inputs

Input Required Source Safe example Gate behavior
run-id — Unique lowercase run ownership identifier Yes parameter az104l24-01 block
subscription-id — Expected disposable subscription ID Yes parameter-or-environment (AZ104_SUBSCRIPTION_ID) 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 block
location — Approved primary Azure region Yes parameter-or-environment (AZ104_LOCATION) westeurope block

Secrets stay in temporary environment variables and are never written to run.json, validation evidence, or Git. A skip-checkpoint gate produces a visible partial result; it never becomes a pass.

Read-only preflight

Readiness, preview, explicit execution, and result validation
Follow the read-only checks and execution gates defined by this lab. A failed required gate blocks progress. Open at full size.

Sign in deliberately, inspect the active context, then run the lab preflight. It never signs in, changes context, installs an extension, registers a provider, or creates a resource.

az login
az account show --query '{cloud:environmentName,subscription:id,tenant:tenantId,user:user.name}' --output json
./scripts/cli/Preflight.ps1 -SubscriptionId $env:AZ104_SUBSCRIPTION_ID -RunId 'az104l24-01' -Location 'westeurope'

Representative redacted output:

context                 True  cloud=AzureCloud; tenant=<redacted>; subscription=<redacted>
azure-cli               True  2.88.x
provider:<namespace>    True  Registered
region                  True  westeurope
Preflight passed. It performed no Azure mutation.

If a required row fails, stop. Correct the local tool, context, provider, quota, SKU, region, permission, or input outside the lab, then rerun preflight.

Task 1 — Verify Recovery Services and protected-VM prerequisites

Checkpoint: LAB24-CP01

Purpose and operational relevance: Read the provider, region, SKU, feature, quota, and companion-tool signals needed for verify recovery services and protected-vm prerequisites, without changing Azure state. The change is unsafe when vault registration and backup operations fail when the RecoveryServices provider or VM SKU is unavailable. This checkpoint therefore proves: The region supports the selected VM size and the Recovery Services provider is ready for vault and protection operations.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az provider show --namespace Microsoft.RecoveryServices --query registrationState --output tsv
az vm list-skus --location $Location --size Standard_B1s --all --query "[?name=='Standard_B1s'].name" --output tsv
if (-not (Get-Command ssh-keygen -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue)) { throw 'ssh-keygen is required for the disposable VM key.' }

Expected state: The region supports the selected VM size and the Recovery Services provider is ready for vault and protection operations.

Representative redacted output:

The region supports the selected VM size and the Recovery Services provider is ready for vault and protection operations.

Positive validation:

$provider = az provider show --namespace Microsoft.RecoveryServices --query registrationState --output tsv
if ($provider -ne 'Registered') { throw 'Microsoft.RecoveryServices is not registered.' }

Expected positive result: The region supports the selected VM size and the Recovery Services provider is ready for vault and protection operations.

Negative validation:

$sku = az vm list-skus --location $Location --size Standard_B1s --all --query '[?name==`Standard_B1s` && (restrictions==null || length(restrictions)==`0`)] | length(@)' --output tsv
if ([int]$sku -lt 1) { throw 'Standard_B1s is restricted in the selected region.' }

Expected negative result: LAB24-CP01 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: Standard_B1s is restricted in the selected region.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB24-CP01 UTC result for verify recovery services and protected-vm prerequisites.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB24-CP01.
  • Positive assertion proving: The region supports the selected VM size and the Recovery Services provider is ready for vault and protection operations.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: Standard_B1s is restricted in the selected region.

Common failure and safe retry: Vault registration and backup operations fail when the RecoveryServices provider or VM SKU is unavailable. Retry LAB24-CP01 for verify recovery services and protected-vm prerequisites only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB24-CP02, LAB24-CP03, LAB24-CP04, LAB24-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB24-CP01 for verify recovery services and protected-vm prerequisites; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 2 — Create the private VM, staging storage, and vault

Checkpoint: LAB24-CP02

Purpose and operational relevance: Provision and immediately inventory the exact run-owned resources needed to create the private vm, staging storage, and vault, so partial completion remains recoverable. The change is unsafe when a VM without a recoverable SSH key path or with an unsupported image/size can fail before backup begins. This checkpoint therefore proves: The VM has no public IP and the vault, storage account, and VM IDs are persisted before protection is enabled.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

$vault = "rsv-$suffix"; $vm = "vm-$suffix"; $vnet = "vnet-$suffix"; $nic = "nic-$suffix"; $staging = "st24$suffix"
$keyPath = Join-Path $StateDir 'id_ed25519'
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -N '' -f $keyPath | Out-Null
az network vnet create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vnet --address-prefixes 10.24.0.0/16 --subnet-name workload --subnet-prefixes 10.24.1.0/24 --output none
az network nic create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $nic --vnet-name $vnet --subnet workload --output none
az vm create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vm --image Ubuntu2204 --size Standard_B1s --admin-username azureadmin --ssh-key-values "$keyPath.pub" --nics $nic --output none
az storage account create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $staging --location $Location --sku Standard_LRS --kind StorageV2 --https-only true --allow-blob-public-access false --output none
az backup vault create --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vault --location $Location --output none

Expected state: The VM has no public IP and the vault, storage account, and VM IDs are persisted before protection is enabled.

Representative redacted output:

The VM has no public IP and the vault, storage account, and VM IDs are persisted before protection is enabled.

Positive validation:

$stateValue = az backup vault show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vault --query properties.provisioningState --output tsv
if ($stateValue -ne 'Succeeded') { throw "Recovery Services vault state is $stateValue." }

Expected positive result: The VM has no public IP and the vault, storage account, and VM IDs are persisted before protection is enabled.

Negative validation:

$publicIp = az vm show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vm --show-details --query publicIps --output tsv
if ($publicIp) { throw 'The protected VM unexpectedly has a public IP.' }

Expected negative result: LAB24-CP02 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: The protected VM unexpectedly has a public IP.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB24-CP02 UTC result for create the private vm, staging storage, and vault.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB24-CP02.
  • Positive assertion proving: The VM has no public IP and the vault, storage account, and VM IDs are persisted before protection is enabled.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: The protected VM unexpectedly has a public IP.

Common failure and safe retry: A VM without a recoverable SSH key path or with an unsupported image/size can fail before backup begins. Retry LAB24-CP02 for create the private vm, staging storage, and vault only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB24-CP03, LAB24-CP04, LAB24-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB24-CP02 for create the private vm, staging storage, and vault; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 3 — Enable VM protection and complete an on-demand backup

Checkpoint: LAB24-CP03

Purpose and operational relevance: Configure and independently inspect the control-plane and data-path properties needed to enable vm protection and complete an on-demand backup. The change is unsafe when policy association can succeed before the protected item becomes queryable, requiring a bounded convergence wait. This checkpoint therefore proves: The protected item resolves in the vault and the bounded backup job reaches Completed with a recovery point.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az backup protection enable-for-vm --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --vm $vm --policy-name DefaultPolicy --output none
$retainUntil = (Get-Date).ToUniversalTime().AddDays(7).ToString('dd-MM-yyyy')
$backupJob = az backup protection backup-now --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --container-name $vm --item-name $vm --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --retain-until $retainUntil --query name --output tsv
az backup job wait --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --name $backupJob --timeout 3600

Expected state: The protected item resolves in the vault and the bounded backup job reaches Completed with a recovery point.

Representative redacted output:

The protected item resolves in the vault and the bounded backup job reaches Completed with a recovery point.

Positive validation:

$itemState = az backup item list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --query "[?properties.friendlyName=='$vm'].properties.protectionState | [0]" --output tsv
if ($itemState -ne 'Protected') { throw "Backup protection state is $itemState." }

Expected positive result: The protected item resolves in the vault and the bounded backup job reaches Completed with a recovery point.

Negative validation:

$failedJobs = az backup job list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --status Failed --query "[?properties.entityFriendlyName=='$vm'] | length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$failedJobs -ne 0) { throw 'A VM backup job failed.' }

Expected negative result: LAB24-CP03 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: A VM backup job failed.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB24-CP03 UTC result for enable vm protection and complete an on-demand backup.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB24-CP03.
  • Positive assertion proving: The protected item resolves in the vault and the bounded backup job reaches Completed with a recovery point.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: A VM backup job failed.

Common failure and safe retry: Policy association can succeed before the protected item becomes queryable, requiring a bounded convergence wait. Retry LAB24-CP03 for enable vm protection and complete an on-demand backup only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB24-CP04, LAB24-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB24-CP03 for enable vm protection and complete an on-demand backup; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 4 — Restore disks from the recorded recovery point

Checkpoint: LAB24-CP04

Purpose and operational relevance: Exercise the deterministic operational or denied path needed to restore disks from the recorded recovery point, then retain comparable before-and-after results. The change is unsafe when using a stale recovery-point name or insufficient staging-storage permission causes restore to fail. This checkpoint therefore proves: The restore job reaches Completed and produces a restore artifact in the designated staging account/resource group.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

$recoveryPoint = az backup recoverypoint list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --container-name $vm --item-name $vm --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --query "[0].name" --output tsv
if (-not $recoveryPoint) { throw 'No recovery point is available for the restore exercise.' }
$restoreJob = az backup restore restore-disks --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --container-name $vm --item-name $vm --rp-name $recoveryPoint --storage-account $staging --target-resource-group $ResourceGroupName --restore-to-staging-storage-account true --query name --output tsv
az backup job wait --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --name $restoreJob --timeout 3600

Expected state: The restore job reaches Completed and produces a restore artifact in the designated staging account/resource group.

Representative redacted output:

The restore job reaches Completed and produces a restore artifact in the designated staging account/resource group.

Positive validation:

$completedRestore = az backup job list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --operation Restore --status Completed --query "[?properties.entityFriendlyName=='$vm'] | length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$completedRestore -lt 1) { throw 'No completed restore job was found.' }

Expected positive result: The restore job reaches Completed and produces a restore artifact in the designated staging account/resource group.

Negative validation:

$failedRestore = az backup job list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --operation Restore --status Failed --query "[?properties.entityFriendlyName=='$vm'] | length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$failedRestore -ne 0) { throw 'A restore job failed.' }

Expected negative result: LAB24-CP04 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: A restore job failed.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB24-CP04 UTC result for restore disks from the recorded recovery point.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB24-CP04.
  • Positive assertion proving: The restore job reaches Completed and produces a restore artifact in the designated staging account/resource group.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: A restore job failed.

Common failure and safe retry: Using a stale recovery-point name or insufficient staging-storage permission causes restore to fail. Retry LAB24-CP04 for restore disks from the recorded recovery point only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After LAB24-CP05, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB24-CP04 for restore disks from the recorded recovery point; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Task 5 — Reconcile protection, jobs, recovery points, and retained state

Checkpoint: LAB24-CP05

Purpose and operational relevance: Reconcile live service properties, returned IDs, and dependency-aware removal needed to reconcile protection, jobs, recovery points, and retained state before handoff. The change is unsafe when deleting a vault while protection is active is deterministically refused and must never be bypassed with purge. This checkpoint therefore proves: Protected-item status, completed backup/restore jobs, recovery-point identity, and soft-delete expectations are all explicit.

Run these commands from PowerShell. If you already used the automated lane, choose a new run ID before trying this guided lane.

az backup item list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --query "[].{vm:properties.friendlyName,state:properties.protectionState,policy:properties.policyName}" --output table
az backup recoverypoint list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --container-name $vm --item-name $vm --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --query "[].{name:name,time:properties.recoveryPointTime,type:properties.recoveryPointType}" --output table
az backup job list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --query "[].{operation:properties.operation,status:properties.status,started:properties.startTime}" --output table

Expected state: Protected-item status, completed backup/restore jobs, recovery-point identity, and soft-delete expectations are all explicit.

Representative redacted output:

Protected-item status, completed backup/restore jobs, recovery-point identity, and soft-delete expectations are all explicit.

Positive validation:

$recoveryPoints = az backup recoverypoint list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --container-name $vm --item-name $vm --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --query "length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$recoveryPoints -lt 1) { throw 'The protected VM has no recovery point.' }

Expected positive result: Protected-item status, completed backup/restore jobs, recovery-point identity, and soft-delete expectations are all explicit.

Negative validation:

$activeJobs = az backup job list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --status InProgress --query "length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$activeJobs -ne 0) { throw 'A backup or restore job is still in progress.' }

Expected negative result: LAB24-CP05 negative boundary: The undesired state is absent; the negative assertion must not report: A backup or restore job is still in progress.

Evidence to retain:

  • LAB24-CP05 UTC result for reconcile protection, jobs, recovery points, and retained state.
  • Exact run-owned resource/object ID returned by the commands in LAB24-CP05.
  • Positive assertion proving: Protected-item status, completed backup/restore jobs, recovery-point identity, and soft-delete expectations are all explicit.
  • Negative assertion proving absence of: A backup or restore job is still in progress.

Common failure and safe retry: Deleting a vault while protection is active is deterministically refused and must never be bypassed with purge. Retry LAB24-CP05 for reconcile protection, jobs, recovery points, and retained state only after its exact recorded ID and current property are read. If the ID exists, reissue only the idempotent update; if it is absent, repeat only the owning create command, then rerun both assertions.

Cleanup dependency: After all service validation and evidence capture, remove the exact manifest IDs created or configured by LAB24-CP05 for reconcile protection, jobs, recovery points, and retained state; its residual probe must then return zero active IDs.

Final validation and result interpretation

Run independent deployment validation after all required checkpoints:

./scripts/cli/Validate.ps1 -RunId 'az104l24-01' -Mode Deployment
az resource list --resource-group 'rg-az104-l24-az104l24-01' --query '[].{name:name,type:type}' --output table
  • pass: every required positive and negative check passed.
  • partial: every required check passed, but at least one optional gate was deliberately skipped.
  • fail: a required checkpoint failed; do not record the lab as complete.

Keep the redacted validation.json; do not retain credentials, tokens, access keys, certificate material, email addresses, tenant IDs, or unredacted command output.

Deterministic break/fix exercise

Injection: Attempt vault deletion while the run-owned VM remains protected; the dependency guard must reject it.

Inject the bounded fault:

az backup vault delete --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vault --force --yes --output none

Capture the failed state with a read-only query:

az backup item list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --output table

Repair only the injected setting, then repeat the same query:

az backup item list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --query "[].properties.protectionState" --output table
az backup vault show --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --name $vault --query properties.provisioningState --output tsv

Expected symptom: The exact vault delete returns a dependency error and the vault remains active.

Diagnose with a read-only service query:

az backup item list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --backup-management-type AzureIaasVM --output table

Diagnosis: List protected items, registered containers, and active jobs by exact vault name.

Repair: Keep protection intact for validation; use the dependency-aware Cleanup script to stop protection and soft-delete the vault.

Before/after evidence must show the failed negative or positive check before repair and the same check passing afterward. Do not inject a second fault until the first is removed.

Optional job-style challenge

Write a restore test with recovery objectives, integrity checks, owner sign-off, and cleanup evidence.

Deliver a short change record containing assumptions, exact commands, redacted evidence, cost and risk notes, rollback, and residual results. The challenge is optional and never changes required checkpoint status.

Troubleshooting

Evidence-led troubleshooting from observation to revalidation
Use read-only evidence to identify the cause, make a targeted repair, and rerun the relevant validation. Open at full size.
Symptom Likely cause Safe next step
Context mismatch Active CLI context differs from run.json Stop, inspect az account show, and select the intended disposable context yourself.
Provider or feature unavailable Registration, region, feature, or SKU gate is unmet Read the preflight result; do not register or enable tenant features implicitly.
Name already exists The run ID is reused or a globally unique name collided Keep existing state intact and choose a new run ID.
Expected state is delayed The service is converging asynchronously Repeat only the read-only query with bounded retries; do not duplicate creation.
Permission denied Role, Graph scope, or data-plane authorization is insufficient Confirm the declared least-privilege boundary; do not broaden access automatically.
Cleanup refuses ownership ID, context, or tags differ from the manifest Investigate the mismatch; never bypass ownership verification.

Cleanup and residual verification

Run-owned cleanup boundary and residual-resource audit
Only verified run-owned objects are eligible for cleanup. Report deliberately retained or soft-deleted items; do not assume they were purged. Open at full size.

Preview exact targets first, execute only after ownership review, then validate post-cleanup:

./scripts/cli/Cleanup.ps1 -RunId 'az104l24-01'
./scripts/cli/Cleanup.ps1 -RunId 'az104l24-01' -Execute
./scripts/cli/Validate.ps1 -RunId 'az104l24-01' -Mode PostCleanup
$activeJobs = az backup job list --resource-group $ResourceGroupName --vault-name $vault --status InProgress --query "length(@)" --output tsv
if ([int]$activeJobs -ne 0) { throw 'A backup or restore job is still in progress.' }

cleanup.json passes only when no active manifest-managed object remains. Soft-deleted or intentionally retained items must be listed with their reason and expected disposition. The lifecycle never performs irreversible purge automatically.

Exam debrief and assessment

Explain why the expected state, negative check, and cleanup boundary matter—not only which command was used. Map any missed concept back to its task anchor before reviewing the answer key.

Complete QUESTIONS.md, then use ANSWERS.md for option-by-option remediation. Scores of 85–100% indicate mastery, 70–84% indicate targeted review, and below 70% means repeat the mapped tasks.
